Tips Tuesday: Nine Tips on Improving Your YouTube Audience Retention [Infographic]

If you’re uploading videos on YouTube — or are planning to for your business — you know that audience retention is a key video metric that determines the success of your video. Actually, audience retention is a vital YouTube metric for those trying to convert their YouTube video viewers into paying customers.

Audience retention measures the amount of people who continue to watch your video after pressing the play button.

  1. To see your channel-level audience retention report, which documents your YouTube audience retention rate averaged across all the videos you’ve posted on your channel, sign into YouTube Studio.
  2. Next, select the “Analytics” tab, which you’ll find in the left-hand menu.
  3. Finally, select the “Engagement” tab from there to find your channel-level audience retention report.

If you’d like to see the audience retention report for a specific video, from the left menu, select “Videos” and click on the Video for which you’d like to see an audience retention report. Again, navigate to the left-hand menu, and select “Analytics.” Then choose the “Engagement” tab from there for your video-level audience retention report.

Ok, so now that you know how to find your audience retention numbers, what is a good audience retention number? According to Uhuru Network, “the average audience retention rate for YouTube hovers between 50% and 60%. That means the typical YouTube viewer watching a typical YouTube video can be expected to stick around for 50% to 60% of the video’s entire duration.”

Looking at many other channels that have their statistics publicly visible, losing 50-60% of your viewers by the half-way point is very common. For most videos, an average view duration in the 70-80% range is performing well.

So what can you do to meet these magical numbers?

Databox has a great article on YouTube audience retention — and by the way, their research found that typical retention rates are slightly above 30% (whew, we’re all feeling better now) — with nice tips on improving audience retention.

The Infographic below has those tips.
