TODAY’S CELEBRATIONS

Today is Friday, May 20, and today is International Red Sneakers Day, NASCAR Day, Flower Day, Eliza Doolittle Day, National Pizza Party Day, National Bike to Work Day – darn I forgot all about that one – as well as World Bee Day and Be a Millionaire Day.

Saturday, May 21 is Armed Forces Day, American Red Cross Founder’s Day, National Learn to Swim Day, World Fiddle Cay, the Preakness States and World Whiskey Day!

Sunday, May 22 is Sherlock Holmes Day, National Solitaire Day, World Goth Day and National Vanilla Pudding Day. May 22 is also National Maritime Day, a time-honored tradition that recognizes one of our country’s most important industries. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, “The United States has always been and will always be a great maritime nation. From our origins as 13 British colonies, through every period of peace and conflict since, the Merchant Marine has been a pillar in this country’s foundation of prosperity and security.” In 1933, Congress declared National Maritime Day to commemorate the American steamship Savannah’s voyage from the United States to England, marking the first successful crossing of the Atlantic Ocean with steam propulsion. During World War II more than 250,000 members of the American Merchant Marine served their country, with more than 6,700 giving their lives, hundreds being detained as prisoners of war and more than 800 U.S. merchant ships being sunk or damaged.

FEATURED CONTENT

Nielsen recently released the third installment of its Podcasting Today report. The latest edition highlights the significant growth in podcast audiences and content, and how brands and advertisers can utilize the medium to amplify reach and ROI.

Podcasting Today revealed that the number of podcast titles and episodes have increased by nearly 200% each over the last two years (2 million and 92 million, respectively), and over 50% of daily podcast consumers listen more often and to more titles, adding to the potential of increased audience reach. The report also found that podcast listeners are more likely to plan a major purchase within 12 months — such as new technology, home entertainment, or a vehicle — and 88% of these consumers are willing to consider a new brand, making podcast advertisements a useful tool for marketers looking to drive upper-funnel engagement.

Nielsen Podcast Ad Effectiveness insights found that podcast ads drive an aided brand recall rate of 71%, while 56% of podcast listeners say they pay more attention to ads read by the host(s).

With the Podcasting Today report identifying a 40% increase in podcasting’s listener base since 2018, the medium has become an effective way to reach new and existing consumers, and marketers are taking note.

Nielsen’s 2022 Annual Marketing Report found that 56% of marketers in North America plan to increase their podcast spending over the next year, and 15% of marketers plan to increase their podcast spending by 50% or more in the same timeframe.

THIS WEEK’S FEATURED TIP

YouTube Video Marketing Tips from Nick Nimmin

Nick Nimmin, a video marketing strategist with over 836,000 YouTube subscribers, talks in a podcast about how marketers can create a successful YouTube video strategy. Nimmin explains the importance of long-form video in reaching engaged, targeted audiences, how to drive conversions with the right video content, video optimization and why YouTube’s grouping feature is so important. He also insists that your content and tech setup doesn’t need to be fancy as long as it has value. Focus on creating that viewer experience. Definitely worth a listen. Find the link to the MarketingProfs (free registration) article at jimperson.com/20.

IN NEWS

Consumers Adjust Grocery Habits as Prices Climb
As the price of groceries continues to rise, consumers are paying more attention to — and, in many cases, actively managing — their grocery budgets, buying generic or store brands in lieu of their favorite brands, shopping sales, and clipping coupons to save money. The Bureau of Labor Statistics’ food at home consumer price index rose 10% between March 2021 and March 2022. The magnitude of that change, paired with the media attention on inflation in grocery prices and across the economy, is contributing to high levels of cost concern among consumers — and lots of cost-saving measures. That story from Morning Consult.

Report: Elon Musk Generates More Online Buzz than Rihanna, Britney Spears
Meanwhile, the New York Post reports that Elon Musk’s bid to mount a hostile takeover of Twitter is helping his Q rating — or popularity — as the world’s richest man is generating more online interest than pop stars Rihanna and Britney Spears, according to a study. Musk is the tech mogul who has drawn more internet buzz than any of his mutli-billionaire peers in Silicon Valley. According to the online tracking company Taboola, Musk has had more mentions online than Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, Meta Platforms CEO Mark Zuckerberg and Apple CEO Tim Cook combined over the past 90 days.

For People with Disabilities, AI Can Only Go So Far to Make the Web More Accessible

Protocol reports that whether struggling to comprehend a screen reader barking out dynamic updates to a website, trying to make sense of poorly written video captions or watching out for fast-moving imagery that could induce a seizure, the everyday obstacles blocking people with disabilities from a satisfying digital experience are immense. AI and automated software that promises to make the web more accessible abounds, but people with disabilities and those who regularly test for digital accessibility problems say it can only go so far.

BONUS CONTENT

Now for some “bonus content” for you as a podcast listener. This is something not included in the weekly TNT Report newsletter.

Our bonus today is from eMarketer. U.S. TikTok users will spend more time with the social media platform this year than YouTube users will spend on YouTube. This difference will be just about a fraction of a minute but will expand in years to come.

  • Time spent scrolling through TikTok has been growing fast, and the app is notorious for pulling users in.In 2020, the platform shot past Facebook and Instagram, with users spending 38.6 minutes on TikTok, 4 minutes more than Facebook’s 34.6 minutes, despite the social network seeing peek use.
  • Time spent with Facebook is now decreasing, and TikTok is targeting YouTube. The ByteDance-owned app rolled out 3-minute videos last year, then 5-minute videos a few months later. And in February, the app took a clear step toward long-form contentwith the introduction of 10-minute videos.
  • Over 40% of Gen Z spends more than 3 hours a day on TikTok, per Joy Ventures and getWizer. While that figure may sound incredible, around the same proportion of Gen Z spends more than 3 hours with YouTube, meaning social media addiction is not just a TikTok-specific problem.
  • Platforms are copying TikTok. TikTok is copying back. Instagram and YouTube are trying to take on TikTok’s short-form dominance with Reelsand Shorts, respectively. Meanwhile, TikTok is looking to other competitors, including Twitter with the introduction of a Repost function, Snapchat and Instagram with Stories, and Twitch with desktop livestreaming software.
