According to Morning Consult, Twitter users worry about the effects of taking the social media company private.

Elon Musk pledged to take Twitter Inc. private as part of his $44 billion takeover bid for the company, and protect freedom of expression on a platform he has called the “de facto town square.” However, a recent Morning Consult survey shows concern among its users about hate speech, misinformation and political content if platforms privatize.

About 2 in 5 U.S. Twitter users said the spread of misinformation would get worse if social media companies go private, compared to 1 in 5 who said it would get better, while over a third said they believe political debate and hate speech would get worse if a social media platform went from public to private.

What say you? Is the Musk purchase a boon for free speech or just the opposite? Regardless… it’ll definitely be something interesting to follow.

And while I’m not a betting man, I most certainly would not bet against Musk on this one. After all, he is the founder, CEO, and Chief Engineer at SpaceX; angel investor, CEO, and Product Architect of Tesla, Inc.; founder of The Boring Company; and co-founder of Neuralink and OpenAI. His success dates back to 1995 when he co-founded Zip2, and later, established X.com, which became PayPal, according to Wikiwand.

BONUS CONTENT

Now for some “bonus content” for you as a podcast listener. This is something not included in the weekly TNT Report newsletter.

Alcohol Sales Increased

With the COVID-19 pandemic now entering its third year, we are all familiarized with the adverse effects of the virus. Despite issues with a broken supply chain and what seemed like world-wide decreases in sales, the alcohol industry was able to hold strong over the course of the pandemic. According to a research study conducted by researchers at the Columbia University Mailman School of Public Health, sales at alcohol retail stores increased substantially. When looking at the first three quarters of 2020, alcohol sales increased by 20% over the first three quarters from the previous year. With the abundance of choice American consumers have when browsing the shelves of their local liquor stores, beer remains a nationwide favorite. In fact, according to Beer Serves America, the beer industry alone contributed over $331 billion in 2020 alone — equivalent to almost two percent of the GDP generated by the United States that year. In fact, Americans drank on average almost 26 gallons of beer per adult aged 21 or over in 2020. The five states that drank the most beer per gallon per adult were New Hampshire, Montana, North Dakota, South Dakota and Vermont. The five states that drank the least beer, again per gallon per adult, were Washington, D.C., Maryland, Connecticut, New Jersey and Utah. Bottom line, this statistic, while “interesting,” really doesn’t mean a whole lot since it just shows that the highest beer drinking states as measured by consumption of gallons per adult were less populated states and the least beer drinking states by consumption were more heavily populated states, which makes sense when factored by that measurement.

Meanwhile, according to Morning Consult, the adult beverage industry appears to be in a precarious position as consumers cut spending overall and show signs of shifting discretionary purchases from goods back to services. Overall, consumers’ reported spending on alcohol was down 15% month over month in March as elevated expenses for necessities like groceries and gas precipitated declines in nonessential purchases. This pullback in spending, which has been more pronounced for physical products such as  alcohol than it has for services, hints at the changing role of alcohol in consumers’ lives.
