Better Headlines with One Click

It seems we all have to write, and let’s face it, some are better than others. Emails, reports, blog posts, correspondence, etc.

And unfortunately, lots of what we write goes unread. Face it, many of us are skimmers.

We skim down and read the headline to see if it interests us, and if it does, we’ll give it a few seconds and skim the subheads and maybe the bullet points.

So how can you make your headlines captivating? Headlines that encourage your audience to read further.

Check out the Headline Analyzer Tool. It uses over 50 different data points to evaluate your headline, email subject, or ad title on a scale from 1-100 for the following categories readability, SEO, and sentiment (emotion).

All you have to do is enter a headline and press the “Analyze” button.

I ran the tool with my original title (headline) for this blog post — “Tools Thursday: Write Better Headlines with the Headline Analyzer Tool” — not great!

So I tried a variation: “Write Better Headlines with a Simple Online Click.” I must admit it is a better headline, and the tool agreed with a much better overall score, and improved scores for readability (actually making it in to the green category) and SEO.

Finally, I decided to give it one last try. So I analyzed the headline “Better Headlines with One Click.” Yahoo, I found a winner!

As you can see, I didn’t keep the original headline. Why would I. The analyze tool only took a couple of seconds and with such an improved score, more readers should be able to not only find this blog post about this useful tool (SEO), but also be able to read it and easily understand it (Readability), so if it’s a topic they’re interested in, they’ll keep reading.

You’ll definitely want to give this tool a try. Run a headline and see your score, but more importantly, scroll down the page and read the explanations and suggestions on what you can do to improve.

You can also capitalize your headline by clicking “Capitalize” — I’ve always used all capitalized headlines (and subheads) in whatever I write.

And if you do lots of email, you’ll also want to try the dedicated email subject line tool.
